#TuksAthletics: Team SA shines at CAA African Championships

The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) African Championships took place in Durban from 22 to 26 June 2016. Thirty-one athletes and three coaches from TuksAthletics were selected to represent South Africa in this prestigious event.

Tuks/hpc athlete Wenda Nel won the African 400-m hurdles title for the second time at the African Championships and was also part of the 4 x 400 m South African women's relay team that won gold and set a new South African record with a time of 3:28,49.

100 m sprinter Carina Horn (Tuks/hpc) took second place with a time of 11,07 s. Akani Simbine (Tuks/hpc) took third place in the men's 100 m clocking in at 10,05 s, followed by TuksSport High School Grade-12 learner Gift Leotlela who came fourth in 10,24 s.

Team SA won the 4 x 100 m men's and women's relay events in 38,84 and 43,66 respectively. Three of the male athletes (Emile Erasmus, Gift Leotlela, and Akani Simbine) and two of the female athletes (Tebogo Mmathu and Carina Horn) were from TuksAthletics. The female relay team ran the second-fastest time ever ran by a women's team in South Africa.

In the final of the 400m hurdles, LJ van Zyl came fourth with a time of 49,46 s and Cornel Fredericks placed sixth in 49.82.

Fredriech Pretorius (Tuks) won the decathlon with a total of 7 780 points, 25 points better than his previous best. He won the 1 500 m, the final event, in 4:25,20. Tuks long-jumper Luvo Manyonga (Tuks/hpc) came second with a jump of 8,23 m.

In the Javelin event, South Africa did not disappoint. Philmar Janse van Rensburg won gold for team SA with a distance of 76,04 m, Tobie Holtzhauzen got fourth place with a distance of 73,45 m and Chad Herman was sixth with a distance of 71,26 m.
