Message from the Vice-Chancellor on today's closure

Posted on February 19, 2016

Dear parents and guardians of UP students

Following student protest action yesterday, the Hatfield and Groenkloof campuses of the University of Pretoria were closed today. The decision to close the campuses was taken because of threats of disruption of lectures and threats of violent action in the course of yesterday evening.  While we understand your concern over the closure, the safety of our students and staff remains paramount. At universities across the country, there have been incidents of violence.  We wish to avoid exposing our students to such high levels of risk.

Yesterday’s protest action was focussed on the ongoing review of the University’s language policy. To facilitate feedback on this matter, an email address ( [email protected] ) has been set up whereby responses to the proposals on the revised language policy can be communicated (www.up.ac.za/en/news).  As key stakeholders, you are encouraged to use this as a means to engage with the issues at hand.

Provision will be made for tests and lectures that were missed, and information in this regard will be provided to students via the UP website and the Clickup student portal.
