APPOINTMENT OF A COUNCIL MEMBER

ON THE BASIS OF EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE

 

The University Council governs the University in terms of the Higher Education Act of 1997 and the Higher Education Laws Amendment Act of 2011, and the Statute of the University of Pretoria. Council has a general policy-making and monitoring responsibility. This includes determining guidelines for strategic and financial governance, staff matters, information technology, the fostering of a positive academic atmosphere as well as the establishment of general policy.

 

The University of Pretoria plays an important role nationally and makes a significant contribution to South Africa’s international standing. Council is the University’s governing body. It has a fiduciary duty and is ultimately responsible for determining the University’s strategic direction.

 

Organisations, interest groups and individuals are hereby invited to nominate a candidate to serve on the Council of the University of Pretoria. The nominee should preferably have experience of the higher education sector as well as tertiary qualifications and high-level expertise and experience in the financial and/or investment management fields. There is one vacancy to be filled in this category for a four-year term running from 1 December 2015 to 30 November 2019.

 

Please note that this category forms part of the external group of Council members and therefore section 27(6) of the Higher Education Act, which determines that no employee or student of the University may be considered for appointment, is applicable.

 

Nominations should be in writing and be accompanied by a short curriculum vitae as well as the acceptance of the nomination by the nominee under his or her signature. In addition, it is required that the nominee should indicate in writing his/her willingness to serve on Committees of Council in the event that he/she is appointed to Council. Nomination forms are available from the Office of the Registrar.

 

Nominations should reach the Registrar of the University no later than 16:00 on Wednesday, 2 September 2015.

 

Council will appoint a member from the ranks of the nominees or from the ranks of the nominees that have been shortlisted by the Standing Committee of Council. The Council member thus elected will serve on the Council in his/her personal capacity and not as a representative of any interest group.
