TuksRag and the Community Engagement Unit are working together to raise funds for Casual Day, a fund-raising project for persons with disabilities, which will be held on Friday, 4 September 2015. The University of Pretoria (UP) has registered with Casual Day and will be able to keep 40% of the funds generated – the target is about R100 000. It is proposed that part of the funding be donated to UP's own Disability Unit. UP’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Cheryl de la Rey, will open the Disability Unit on Casual Day. Prof De la Rey will present awards to the people and groups who raise the most funds and will also present the funds to the organisers.
Local schools are also participating in this event and will compete to receive an award for the most funds raised. In 2014, schools from Mamelodi raised the most funds and were the overall winners. The funds raised will also benefit various centres in local communities that cater for people living with disabilities.
Mamelodi West is planning a health walk to celebrate the day and to raise awareness of people living with disabilities. For more information on the walk, please contact Mary Shibambu at [email protected] or at (012) 420 5199.
Staff and students can buy tickets from various shops on the UP campuses. A cost centre and account number will soon be made available for buying tickets by means of an internal transfer. For more information, to buy tickets, or if you would like to sell tickets, please contact Londiwe Mahlangu at (012) 420 2826 or [email protected], or Gernia at (012) 420 5341 or [email protected].
