Women's political leadership in South Africa

Posted on August 12, 2015

August is Women’s month and on Sunday, 9 August we also commemorated our nation’s annual Women’s Day. This day pays tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest of the extension of Pass Laws to include women. The theme for 2015 is Women United in Moving South Africa Forward.

As part of this year’s Women’s Day Celebrations, Prof Christi van der Westhuizen, an Associate Professor at the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender at the University of Pretoria, was a guest on RSG's Praat Saam programme with Lynette Francis on Friday, 7 August.

The conversation covered women's political leadership in South Africa, including whether a female president is a possibility in the future and how women's empowerment can be expanded across social sectors.
