Re-a-bua dialogue sessions

Posted on July 21, 2015

The Transformation Office wishes to remind you of the continuation of the Re-a-bua dialogue sessions (please see dates at the end of the article).

In support of the UP Vision 2025 to be a leading research-intensive university in Africa, recognised internationally for its quality, relevance and impact, and also for developing people, creating knowledge and making a difference locally and globally, the University strives to instil a culture of inclusivity in which diversity is valued and celebrated, and to foster creativity and innovation by attracting diverse staff and students.

The Re-a-bua dialogues are the foundation for the UP Journey for Change – a framework designed to drive social transformation at UP. The dialogues add value to the University’s transformation agenda and give participants an opportunity to learn more about the value of inclusivity and diversity at UP.

Participants in Re-a-bua mentioned the following positive points after attending dialogue sessions:

  • Interpersonal relationships among members of staff are positive.
  • The University is making an effort to include students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Efforts have been made to accommodate students and staff with disabilities, eg by the provision of ramps and lifts.
  • Management is more consistent in applying policies.
  • On the whole, management is responsive to staff and relationships with management are generally based on respect.
  • Heads of department and managers who support transformation make a difference and lead by example.

Past dialogues were characterised by high levels of participation and energy and elicited positive feedback from participants, including the following:

‘All in all very informative, a real eye opener, we need to run sessions throughout the University.’

‘A well-designed session in a safe environment.’

‘I believe we are well on track to becoming inclusive and diverse. There was an overwhelming feeling of everyone’s embracing each other and working together.’
