The Department of Research and Innovation Support (DRIS) will be hosting a series of workshops between 15 and 29 May 2015.

 

Topic: Postgraduate supervision

Date: 15 May 2015

Time: 08:00–13:30

Venue: Training Room 1, Merensky Library

Facilitator: Prof Denver Hendricks

The following topics will be addressed during the workshop:

  • Principles of putting together proposals
  • The memorandum of understanding (MoU) as a contract and guideline
  • Student expectations
  • Quality control – responsibility for data and research outputs: papers and theses
  • Other issues (problem-solving, project management, time management, mentoring)
  • Equipping students for the next step

 

Topic: Preparing for NRF rating

Date: 22 May 2015

Time: 08:00–13:30

Venue: Room 1-23, Graduate Centre

Facilitators: Prof Mapundi Banda and Dr Heike Lutermann

The following topics will be addressed during the workshop:

  • NRF online system and compiling of CVs to apply for rating
  • Information and advice on how to prepare for NRF rating

 

Topic: Writing for publication

Date: 28–29 May 2015

Time: 08:00–15:00

Venue: Room 1-23, Graduate Centre

Facilitator: Prof Cheryl McCrindle

The following topics will be addressed during the workshop:

  • How to write for impact by ensuring the proper positioning of a theoretical contribution, or what is commonly called 'setting the hook’
  • Essential elements of writing articles for publication in journals and tips for those hoping to become productive writers
  • Strategies for appreciating the importance of publishing and developing an idea from an original concept to a draft publication; understanding the different types of publications and journal publishing processes; and responding to reviewer comments
