USING SOUTH AFRICAN FLY ASH AS A COMPONENT OF ALKALI-ACTIVATED BINDER

ABSTRACT
The presentation will be focused on alkali activation of South African fly ash with the aim to utilize high volumes of fly ash in construction material, such as concrete. This new type of binder does not contain Portland cement and can potentially reduce carbon dioxide emission related to production of cement.
Rational technological parameters such as temperature of heat curing and duration of curing, mix proportions of alkali-activated fly ash cements have been determined; and alkaliactivated fly ash cement pastes have been characterized by different techniques (XRD, ATR-FTIR, SEM).
Evaluation of alkali-activated fly ash concrete properties showed that concrete with good mechanical and durability performance (comparable to conventional concrete) can be produced using alkali-activated fly ash cement as a binder.
