A memorial service was held in the Musaion on 4 January 2013, attended by Philippa’s three sisters, Karien de Kock, Madel Viljoen and Gerbie van Heerden as well as colleagues and students. Well-known friends from the music and entertainment industry like Mimi Coertse and Tobie Cronjé also came to pay their last respects. Her sisters remembered her sense of humour, her love for people and art and the abandon with which she enjoyed even the simple pleasures of life.
“Philippa death came as a great shock to the University community. She was in the prime of her life and was uniquely qualified for the position she held at UP,” Prof Melck said.
“Philippa's management of UPSO and its members, the students, was excellent. Her kind approach to the human side of her job and helping hand that was always extended to students, were characteristics that ensured that the orchestra could always rise to the many challenges faced by such a large group of individuals with a multitude of competing obligations.” With a membership of close to 100 highly talented individuals drawn from all faculties, UPSO is the only full-scaled symphony orchestra in Tshwane.
“She will be fondly remembered by all the musicians who came into contact with her through the orchestra and, of course, her many friends and colleagues,” said Prof Melck.
