The official opening of the fourth term of the fourth legislature will then take place on UP's Mamelodi Campus. This year's theme is The Knowledge Economy and Development Opportunities, and the occasion will as usual be marked by the presentation of the State of the Province Address by the Gauteng Premier, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane. It is anticipated that she will highlight the Gauteng Government's commitment this year and discuss last year's successes and challenges.
Public participation in its activities is a priority for the GPL and for that reason the opening is being brought to the Gauteng community for a second time. Besides the official programme, cultural activities will also be presented. Large groups from the Mamelodi community, as well as learners, are involved. About 1 800 guests are expected, among whom will be dignitaries from the diplomatic dignitaries. UP feels privileged to be part of the event.
For the purposes of the opening, the necessary legal requirements will have to be complied with, and on Monday the Mamelodi Campus will have to be cordoned off as the Gauteng Legislature Area. The front part of the campus will be closed off to accommodate all the guests.
Only accredited vehicles will be allowed in the closed-off area, and it will only be possible to gain access to it in Hinterland Street. All other motorists, including campus staff and students, will have to use the emergency entrance in Ramabulane Street and park on the campus site.
On Monday, academic activities on the Mamelodi Campus will proceed uninterrupted, but all normal community engagement activities will be suspended for the occasion.
