Second Annual Summer School in Biostatistics

Posted on August 29, 2011

For new / young researchers the first week will focus on an Introduction to Biostatistics as well as an introductory course in using STATA 11 software. For more advanced researchers or people with a basic training in biostatistics there will be a course on Survival analysis using STATA in the second week. There will also be a two-day course offered as an introduction to using Stata for the preparation of graphics. The summer school offers you an opportunity to do a workshop in your field of interest or specialisation by offering 4 separate workshops or an option to do all workshops.

Programme

Week 1: Basic Biostatistics for Health Researchers

3 - 4 October 2011 8:30-16:00 daily
This will be an introductory course aimed at new researchers and clinicians involved in biomedical research.
Presenters: Prof. Paul Rheeder (Head of Division of Clinical Epidemiology and the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Track at the SHSPH), Ms. Loveness Dzikiti (Biostatistician, SHSPH). Course Fee: R2 800 (includes tuition and assessment as well as refreshments)

Analysis of Biomedical Data using STATA

5 – 7 October 2011 8:00 - 16:00 daily
This will be a STATA 11 introductory course (with computer practicals). The course will cover data entry and importing, data manipulation, statistical tests (parametric and non parametric), and an introduction to regression commands (linear, logistic, Poisson and Cox proportional hazards).
Presenters: Prof. Paul Rheeder (Head of Division of Clinical Epidemiology and the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Track at the SHSPH), Prof. BV Girdler-Brown (Extraordinary professor, SHSPH), Ms. Loveness Dzikiti (Biostatistician, SHSPH) Course Fee: R4 200 (includes tuition and assessment as well as refreshments)

Introduction to Graphics using STATA

8 & 15 October 2011 (Saturdays)
9:00 - 12:30 daily
These Saturday morning sessions are designed to introduce participants to the preparation of graphics, suitable for reports and publications, using Stata. Presenter: Prof. BV Girdler-Brown (Extraordinary professor,SHSPH)
Course Fee: R1 750 (includes tuition and assessment as well as refreshments)

Week 2: Survival Analysis using STATA

10 - 14 October 2011 8:30-16h00 daily
This course will cover the theory of survival analysis, construction of life tables, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and the Cox proportional hazards model and testing of assumptions, Cox regression involving time dependent covariates, frailty models and competing risk regression.
The course will include didactic lectures as well as extensive computer practical’s using STATA 11.

Presenter: Dr Khangelani Zuma is the Chief Research Specialist and Head of Biostatistics of the HIV/AIDS, STIs and TB research program of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). He has a Master degree from Hasselt University in Belgium and a PhD from Waikato University,New Zealand. He has extensive research and teaching experience and has published extensively.
