Quality Allograft Products

The National Tissue Bank of the University of Pretoria, a division within the Faculty of Health Sciences, is devoted to providing quality allograft products that make it possible to treat a wide range of medical conditions.

As an ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 accredited human tissue bank that complies with the Quality Management System requirements of International Standards, the Tissue Bank maintains the largest and most complete inventory of musculoskeletal allografts available, and insists on the highest standards achievable in its policies, procedures and technological operation.

Every tissue is quality checked from recovery through testing, processing, packaging, sterilisation and distribution. Tracking methods are refined to trace tissue from the donor to each medical facility and the implantation recipient. To further guide the practice of the Tissue Bank, it is informed by recommendations from:

  • The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - International Standards for Tissue Banks
  • The American Association of Tissue Bank (AATB) Standards for Tissue Banking
  • The Food and Drug Administration’s proposed code of conduct for current good tissue practice.

The processing and production laboratory of the Tissue Bank has recently been upgraded to ensure that the highest standards are continuously maintained throughout the production process. Through its dedication to excellence in education, recovery and processing, the Tissue Bank places further impetus to caring for recipients, donors and their families.
