In collaboration with Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi (Department of Water and Environmental Affairs) and Dr Linda Makuleni (CEO of SAWS), the UP Water Institute (or WATER AT UP) became involved in a key initiative that aims to make use of unconventional water collection methods for supplementary water supply to schools and communities in high topography rural areas. In many high topography areas where water is not easily accessible, fog clouds often sweep across the surface. Large vertical screens are then used to collect water droplets from these clouds from where the water is channelled to water tanks. Prof Jana Olivier, who is an Extraordinary Professor in the Department of GGM and who is also a world leader in fog water collection, will coordinate the scientific part of the initiative. Good news is that a R2.4 million research project application by Prof Olivier was recently approved by the Water Research Commission (WRC). This four year project (starting in 2011) will significantly contribute to the success of this initiative.
