Posted on October 21, 2010

Simone Brunton, an Honours  student, won the coveted Hanisch Prize for Excellence in Postgraduate Studies. Simone’s research deals with ritual deposits of animal remains at ‘Iron Age’ Bantu-speaking farmer rain-control sites in Limpopo.

The Hanisch Prize for Excellence in post-Graduate Studies started was first awarded in 1973 when the Witwatersrand Archaeological Society (today the Trans-Vaal Branch of the South African Archaeological Society) decided to set aside funds for a book prize for the best Archaeology student at Tuks, as had been done at Wits with the van Riet Lowe Prize. Prof Hannes Eloff suggested the prize be called the Hanisch Prize after Mr. Hanisch, a noted avocational archaeologist who had died two years previously.
