The Hanisch Prize was first awarded in 1973 when the Witwatersrand Archaeological Society (today the Trans-Vaal Branch of the South African Archaeological Society) decided to set aside funds for a book prize for the best Archaeology student at Tuks, as had been done at Wits with the van Riet Lowe Prize. Prof Hannes Eloff suggested the prize be called the Hanisch Prize after Mr. Hanisch, a noted avocational archaeologist who had died two years previously. Mr. Hanisch’s son, Dr. Edwin Hanisch is a respected member of the South African Archaeological community. His father had over the years been asked to speak about the archaeological history of Pretoria at school, Voortrekker and other interest groups. He also sat on the Pretoria City Council involved with what we today would term “heritage:” Apecial mention must also be made of Ms. Leanne George, who came into the reckoning for the Prize. Last year’s winner was Ms. Nomcebo Matsebula.
