UP students cycle to help children in need

The name, Tour de Dream, gives meaning to the cyclist’s dream to support underprivileged children and to assist them in protecting their basic rights of worthiness; to be able to attend school and to live a carefree life.

Funds were raised over a period of time and daily financial contributions are still made towards the project. This year’s tour received a generous sponsorship from Auto Pedigree. Auto Pedigree also supported the group with vehicles and clothing. The tour operates under the patronage of the Nederduits Hervormde Kerk Philadelphia.

The cyclists plan to raise funds in several towns in Mpumalanga where their services will include washing cars; carrying packets and pushing shopping trolleys.

Projects which will benefit from the funds are managed by the Ondersteuningsraad which is a registered, non-profitable organization. Projects for 2009 include school fees for foster children; school cases for underprivileged learners; fees for traumatized children attending a therapeutic camp as well as the support of care centres; the Jacaranda Children’s Home and Beeld Children’s Fund.

The cyclists leave Pretoria on 21 June where their route of 300 km will include Bronkhorstspruit, Witbank, Groblersdal, Middelburg, Ermelo, Barberton, Malelane, Nelspruit, Sabie and Lydenburg.

The tour manager, Dries Beukes is a final year Elektronic Engineering student and he may be contacted at 083 233 6313.
