Dutch theologian honoured

Prof Heitink was nominated by the Department of Practical Theology. He has earned international regard and respect through his many articles that have been published in national and international journals. His contemplative approach, thoroughness, scientific scholarship and original thinking have been of international influence.

Prof Heitink became known for his comprehensive work on pastoral care and counseling. He has enriched and enlarged the international environment with his work. In this work Prof Heitink gives an excellent account of the scientific and theoretical foundations of practical theology.

Prof Heitink was born on 29 June in 1938 in Arnhen, the Netherlands. Between 1970 and 1988, he was a scientific collaborator and principal university lecturer in Practical Theology at the Theologische Hogeschool Kampen. Between 1988 and 2003, he was a professor, Head of Practical Theology and Dean of the Theology Faculty at the Free University of Amsterdam.

Prof Heitink has been involved with the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Theology as an external examiner for postgraduate students.

Prof Heitink is an excellent theologian who is held in high esteem worldwide. His academic reputation is upheld by several national and international societies of which he is a member, among them the International Academy of Practical Theology (IAPT). He also played role in the scientific founding and establishment of theology in the Netherlands.

Prof Heitink’s connection to and involvement with the University of Pretoria has strengthened the international character of the Faculty of Theology. He is a worthy recipient of the DD-degree (Honoris Causa) and it is an honour to present the degree to him.

This honorary doctorate was part of the Autumn Graduation Ceremonies that started on Wednesday, 9 April and will continue until 25 April.
