Elected to the Institute of Medicine in 1997, President Coleman is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. As a biochemist, who graduated from the University of North Carolina, she built a distinguished research career through her research on the immune system and malignancies.
She authored numerous research articles and directed funded research projects supported by a variety of federal agencies.
