Engineering students set up library at Meetse-A-Bopelo Primary

Meetse-A-Bopelo is a primary school in the informal settlement of Mamelodi. The school is committed to providing quality public education to their learners, parents and the community. The school believes in the principles of Ubuntu that will equip all their students with a basis for being critical, responsible, accountable, honest and unique individuals, who will always strive for excellence in all their adventures and challenges

During 2006 a group of student of the compulsory undergraduate module, JCP, of the Faculty Engineering, Built Environment and Information technology started a library in an unused sink building on the school premises.

A group of students, Ilse Gey van Pittius, Panagioti Grammatikos, Lauren Davey,
Lorraine de Bruin, Corli Leonard and Samson Oduntan, took the project over in
2007.

They secured a donation of books as well as book shelves, categorized and catalogued the books, implemented a simple and functional system for the lending of books. They also put up posters and made a reading corner with cushions and the carpet.
