The high standard ensured that the Aula was packed from Monday to Wednesday evening for the preliminary rounds, while the tickets for the finals held on Friday, July 27, was sold out within hours. The judging of Friday evening took place in the Musaion while the enthusiastic masses could support their favourite residences in the Aula.
With themes like angels, firewomen, hippies and jailbirds, the students really showed off their creativity. Outstanding compositions wowed the crowds and impressed the judges. Interesting arrangements of the prescribed songs, for the ladies “I’d like” from Freshly Ground and for the men “Letters” from Watershed, impressed connoisseurs and enthusiastic students alike.
Six ladies residences and five men’s residences made it to the final. Although Asterhof, Jasmyn and Vividus Ladies put on great performances, Erika, Madelief and Curlitzia walked away with the third, second and first prizes respectively. Sonop won the men’s section, with Mopanie taking the silver medal and Olienhout the bronze.
Curlitzia’s ‘Angels and Grim Reapers’ and Sonop’s ‘Schoolboys’ will represent the University at the National Serenade competition this year. This competition takes place on September 1 at the Kovsies campus in Bloemfontein. There UP, Maties, Kovsies, Pukke and UJ will compete for the honour of being named the best university serenade group in the country.
Curlitzia - Winner in the Ladies Category
