Tuks/hpc golfers ready to compete

St Andrews to compete against the best University Golfers in the World. Two players per University are invited. The University has a proud history in the tournament, in 2001 Pieter Botha emerged triumphant and both Jacques and Reghard are keen to emulate that feat.

Jacques only started hitting golf balls 3 years ago and his rise has been nothing if not meteoric. A potential career in cricket was scuppered due to selection policies and Jacques and his father decided to move to the Golf Course. Under the tutelage of Athol Dowie at the Pretoria Country Club, Jacques quickly improved, to the extent that he was invited to attend the TUKS PGA Course. The course is wide ranging giving those who have potential the opportunity to become pro golfers or move into management, marketing or even coaching. Its also comes with the partnership of the High Performance Centre University of Pretoria and their input has been incredibly valuable.

The hpc University of Pretoria provides everything from gym facilities, to bio-mechanic support, nutrition, sports psychologists and very import technical support in analyzing swings. All of this has seen Van Tonder and Reghard improve to such a level that they were invited to St. Andrews. The tournament starts on the 8 July and goes on to 10 July.

But it is not only Jacques and Reghard who have excelled. Stefan Rall (capt), Shain Johnson, Lukas Steyn and Francois Coetzee will be representing TUKS and the hpc University of Pretoria at a Match Play Tournament in Ingolstadt Germany. The foursome will be playing from 17-20 June.

The Tuks Academy initially started as a Schools Programme. Between the University and the hpc a need was identified to further possibilities for talented young golfers to potentially reach pro status and hence the partnership between the two evolved. The rewards are already being reaped at school level as Teaghan Gauche was recently crowned Gauteng North High Schools Champion. The runners up spot went to team mate Francisco Del Val who hails from Mexico.

Clearly the relationship is working!!!
