Racing in lane 1, Keeling and Di Clemente never seemed to find their rhythym. After 500m they were lying 5th almost 2 seconds behind France but still ahead of the USA. The positions stayed like that until the final 500m of the 2km race. The USA then put in a surge which the South African’s were not able to respond to. The USA pairing ending almost 5 seconds ahead of Keeling and Di Clemente.
