The ladies race evolved into its normal pattern, with Olympian Kate Roberts taking the lead in the swim (8:21 for 750m) and Andrea Steyn (8:40 for the swim) chasing her down on the bike and then both going hammer and tongs in the run.
Roberts (BSG/HPC) was first out of the water, with team mate Vicky van der Merwe this time a few seconds back. The junior Carlyn Fisher, Andrea Steyn and Ashleigh Blackwell (another junior) all coming out of the water in 8:40, 8:41. Then the chase was on. Steyn, showing just why she finished 6th at the recent World Duathlon Championships, screamed through the 20km cycle in 36min 29sec, taking 15seconds out of the 20sec lead Roberts had. Once again it came to down to the run and once again Steyn had more speed, running 18:07 to Roberts 18:16 for the 5km.
