Two events were held this year – the first took place on Tuesday, 9 March 2010 at the piazza on the Hatfield Campus. Another shavathon was held at the Onderstepoort Campus on Wednesday, 10 March 2010.
Students and staff showed that they care about more than exams and assignments – 385 Tukkies visited the piazza to let their hair down (or shaved) for CANSA. The price for a funky CANSA hair-‘do’ (either a shave or a spray) was R50. An amount of R19 300 was raised on the Hatfield Campus alone.
One couldn't miss the Department of Zoology and Entomology - there were about 20 staff members spraying and (mostly) shaving their hair - well done!
Onderstepoort should be commended for raising R10 200 single-handedly on their campus! The Onderstepoort Faculty House, OPVSC, took the initiative to host their own shavathon – which makes their achievement of raising more than a third of the total amount even more significant. A total of 204 heads were ‘revamped’ at Onderstepoort.
Some students and staff also “bailed out” by giving generous cash donations. Well done OP and Tuks as a whole – we are proud to hand over the total amount of R30 000 to CANSA Pretoria.
The 2010 UP Shavathon was truly a collaborative effort. A great thank you to the 40 student volunteers and to Pie City, Big All’s and Coffee Buzz for providing the Shavathon team with delicious eats and drinks during the day. Spar and Media Positioning Solutions joined forces to sponsor the volunteers’ T-shirts and it added a professional touch to the event.
Roman’s Pizza in Hatfield sponsored 300 pizzas to the residence/team that’ve supported Shavathon 2010 the best. Many thanks to Roman’s for making this very generous donation! The competition was tough - Taaibos, Vividus Men and Madelief did their bit but Mopanie won this one – congratulations guys! The faculty houses also showed their support - especially House EBIT, NATHouse and Commercii.
The organisers of the event, Mia Badenhorst and Anneke Bothma, would like to thank Riëtte Pretorius from CANSA Pretoria for her involvement and support. We are proud to say that Riëtte shaved her hair on Tuesday for the first time on our campus. This is worth mentioning since she organises countless shavathons in and around Pretoria. It must have been the positive spirit and uplifting vibe on the UP campus that did the trick. A huge thank you to all involved in this year’s u can shave a difference shavathon – we are looking forward to see you next year for another hair raising experience!
