TuksAlumni Legends 2008 attracts thousands

Posted on June 06, 2008

This year’s races coincided with the University of Pretoria’s Centenary celebrations and the 75th birthday of the Air Force Base Waterkloof. From early Saturday morning people stood in queues to register. At daybreak, the sports grounds at the Base were abuzz. The weather was perfect. All races went well and the feedback after the race was also very positive. Beautiful long-sleeved shirts were handed out to the first 1000 registered competitors and all runners and walkers that completed the race received a Johan Fourie medal.

This year’s Legend, Johan Fourie, played an important role in the success of the race. Not only did he and his wife Marinda take part in the 10 km running race, but he was also available after the race to hand out autographs, or just to chat with the runners.

The purpose of the Legends races is to give recognition to (senior) athletes that have become famous in SA and worldwide. Previous Legends were: 2005: Zola Budd, 2006: Bruce Fordyce, 2007: Sonja Laxton.

The races were sponsored by Sportsman's Warehouse, Bosal and the University of Pretoria. The organising committee of the race included Gerhard Roodt, Giel Cillié, Molene Scheepers, Niel Roux, Jan van Heerden, Luke Burger, Therese Bron, Lynette Schoeman, Rykie Visser, Piet Visser, Johnny Grobbelaar and Danie van Wyk.
