Pioneer on cognitive aging to visit University

The lecture forms part of the Centenary lecture series and takes place at 11:00 in the Senate Hall on the Hatfield campus. Entitled: “There are three major psychological changes with aging. The first is memory, but the other two I forget”, the lecture promises to be both informative and entertaining.

Dr Smith is also Regents Professor of Psychology. Prior to becoming Senior Vice-Provost, he served as Vice-Provost of Undergraduate Studies. As Associate Dean in the College of Sciences he was responsible for the development of the Professional Science master’s programme. He also served as Chair of the School of Psychology.

Dr Smith’s research interests are in the field of cognitive aging. He has been funded by the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute of Mental Health for over 25 years. At Georgia Tech, he won both the Sigma Xi Sustained Research Award and the Outstanding Teacher Award.

Dr Smith is former editor of the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences. In 1997, the Division of Adult Development and Aging of the American Psychological Association (APA) gave him the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award. He has also served on the National Advisory Council on Aging.
