THE CRUCIBLE, a group of girls are discovered dancing wildly in the woods. This discovery leads to riveting and explosive consequences in their society. The narrative that unfolds entails an intricate love story between John Proctor and his wife, Elizabeth. Their relationship is complicated by Abigail’s youthful passion for John. 

Described as one of the masterpieces of the 20th century, this play by Arthur Miller is as relevant and provocative today as it was during the McCarthy political ‘witch-hunts’ of the 1950s in the United States. Themes of power and greed reveal a warning of tyranny on the way, or a reminder of tyranny just past.

Arthur Miller firmly believes that society can transcend its moral, intellectual and emotional aloofness and indifference through the magical transformation of the written text during a theatrical occasion. A production of The Crucible invites an active interrogation like a double-edged sword that differentiates between the (fearful) intellectual judgment of a culture, and the ethical human values formulated by an individual during the formation of identity.

THE CRUCIBLE is directed by Pieter Brand. Pieter Brand, a lecturer in the Drama department, is a multi-award winning actor and director, with no fewer than 9 VITA awards, among many others, to his name. He has acted in works by Ionesco, Genet, Feydeau and more, and his roles have ranged from the lead in Macbeth, to Tjokkie in Siener in die Suburbs.

THE CRUCIBLE is a prescribed work for many High Schools. The production is a must see for teachers and learners who want to invigorate the curriculum and see the play come alive.

The production is supported by UP Arts, and runs at the UP Arts LIER THEATRE from Tuesday the 4th until Saturday the 15th of May. Performance times are as follows:
