Six University of Pretoria alumni receive Laureate Awards

Posted on November 20, 2012

The Laureate Award is the highest award that alumni or friends of the University can receive from fellow alumni. It is organised by the TuksAlumni Office, which maintains channels of communication with alumni and creates opportunities for alumni to continue playing an active role in the University of Pretoria.

The Laureate Awards have been presented to distinguished alumni and friends of the University since 1974. Any member of TuksAlumni may nominate a candidate for such an award and the TuksAlumni Board applies a set of criteria to evaluate nominees and select those who qualify.

This year’s Laureate Award recipients are:

  1. Dr Lance Johan Erasmus Coetzee
  2. Prof Antjie Krog
  3. Ms Maureen Makole Manyama-Matome
  4. Ms Lerato Mosiah
  5. Judge Willem Jacobus van der Merwe
  6. Mr Louis Lukas Stephanus van der Watt

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria, Prof Cheryl de la Rey, congratulated the Laureate recipients and stated that the past year has been an outstanding year for the University in general, also on the sporting front. She further mentioned the University’s new strategic plan, which was implemented in 2012 to raise the institution to greater levels of national and international standing.

“I wish to express our sincere gratitude to all those who support the University in multifaceted ways – through financial donations and grants, scholarships and bursaries for our students, by supporting our sports teams and athletes, and also for being positive ambassadors for the University of Pretoria,” she said.
