Visit to Korea by the Director and Deputy Director of TuksSport

Posted on April 28, 2010

Mr van der Walt and Dr Mulaudzi visited and held exploratory meetings with organisations such the Korea National Sport University, Korea National Council of Sport for All, Korea Taekwondo Association, Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, Korea Institute of Sport Science, Korea National Training Centre, Korea University Sport Board, Yonsei University’s College of Sciences in Education, a private Taekwondo Academy and the Seoul Mapo Arts Centre.

All evidence point to a very successful country with regard to mass participation in sport and elite performance. Korea has become on of the top countries in terms of winning medals at Olympic Games (at both Summer and Winter Games). There appears to be a holistic approach to the development of sports, with Departments of Physical Education being pivotal in preparing men and women able to manage highly effective organisations.

There is strong desire by Hanyang and Yonsei Universities to strike partnership with a university such ours. In both these universities, there was only one partnership with an African University. That is Yonsei University who have some form of relationship with the University of Zimbabwe. We also found that the two universities have rugby programmes.

The University of Pretoria is a strong rugby institution and can add value to the universities programmes. It will therefore be a positive step in the right direction if the University of Pretoria can explore partnerships with Hanyang and Yonsei Universities. We are also going to host a Taekwondo Demonstration Team from the Korea National Sport University.

Overall Mr van der Walt and Dr Mulaudzi  were impressed by the dedication of people in various sport organisations in becoming the best, and also in promoting Physical Education from elementary school to universities.
