The initial once-off payment included setting up the first aid room, purchasing a golf cart and application of marketing material. In addition to that, the yearly contribution was used to fund all consumable equipment and material, clothing for all staff involved in the program, doctors, first aid staff and ambulances.

Ever since 2004, the program has grown substantially and looking at the statistics of 2009, it is easy to see that BESTmed’s contribution has been of immeasurable importance to the University of Pretoria’s Sport program.

In 2009, the first aid program provided services to a total of 359 events (6170 matches/tournaments). This comprised 125 house league (hostel) events, 134 club events and 100 other events – a total of 1950 hours in the different events.

2041 students did their practical hours as first aid workers in the program, 108 doctors did duty during the different events, 67 ambulances were used and a total of 385 injuries were treated. 38 participants sustained serious injuries and had to be transported to hospital by ambulance. To date there have been no fatalities.

The growth of the program can moreover be seen in the escalation of the amount of hours that first aid workers (students) has done duty over the years: 2006 – 528 hours, 2007 – 1169 hours, 2008 – 1753 hours, 2009 – 1950 hours and 2010 (up until 19 August) – 1445.

In 2009 235 injuries were treated. The injuries treated since the start of the sponsorship come to a total of 1729.
