LJ won the 400m hurdles at the 2010 Africa Championships in Nairobi (48.51 seconds). He also represented Africa at the Continental Cup Competition in Split, Croatia and is a regular competitor in the international Diamond League series. LJ was selected to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in October. He came second in the 400 m H final, winning silver with a time of 48.63.
Simphiwe captained the senior national side, Banyana Banyana against Namibia, Tanzania and Cameroon at the African Women Championships. She was vice captain of the senior national team at the Cyprus Women’s Cup Competition and captained Banyana Banyana against Scotland. She has been a member of the national team since 2004 and has accumulated 45 caps to date.
Mr Kobus Van der Walt, Director of TuksSport said the University of Pretoria has once again been blessed with a year of extraordinary sporting excellence.
Tuks were, for instance, well represented in Team South Africa at the recent Commonwealth Games in India, winning seven medals in total. This highlighted a year in which TuksSport achieved consistently in no less than 26 sporting codes:
• 110 Tukkies represented South Africa (97 participants and 13 managers and coaches) with athlectics (39) and rugby (35) topping the list;
• 30 Tukkies were selected for SA A and National Federation Teams;
• 190 Tukkies received Provincial Colours and/or Honourary Service Awards (169 participants and 11 officials) with athletics (37) and rugby (35) again topping the list;
• 23 Tukkies were selected for SA Age Group Teams (19 participants and 4 officials);
• 30 Tukkies were awarded USSA Colours (26 participants and 4 officials)TuksNetball 1 (disguised in Gauteng North colours) won both the SPAR National Netball Championships and NSA Merit Tournament;
• TuksSquash won the USSA Squash Championships for an record 6th timein a row;
• TuksRugby 1 won the Lucas Strachan Shield and Carlton Cup;
• TuksRowing won the USSA Boat Race for the second consecutive year;
• TuksAthlectics won the USSA women’s title;
• TuksAthletics’ women won the USSA Cross Country Championships;
• TuksTableTennis won the USSA Championships;
• TuksGolf won the USSA Tournament for the 2nd year running.
