Tuks to name four Varsity Cup

Posted on January 06, 2010

There will be two captains in the backline and two up front.

“Experience has shown that the team captain’s positional play is bound to suffer under the burden of doing everything right as leader of the pack. The new system of a captain and three deputies will no doubt contribute to better on the field communication and as such also a better response time as far as the execution of moves and patterns are concerned.”

Freddie was tight lipped as to who the most likely candidates for the captaincy corps are.

“Let’s leave that till next Thursday (14 January) when we will officially name them. We have taken many factors into account and the four players we decide on to captain the team, will all be natural leaders,” was all he added.

It will however come as a surprise if Shaun Davids does not get the nod as team captain. He was thrown into the deep end last season when he had to take over the captaincy from Johan de Bruin, who joined the Valke after the Varsity Cup Competition.

Shawn, the first choice fly half led Tuks in the 2009 Carlton Cup Competition, thus becoming the University of Pretoria’s first player of colour to captain the first rugby team.
