Tuks 1 spoils Centurion party

Posted on August 01, 2010

Centurion, a 2009 semi-finalist had to beat Tuks in order to qualify for the play-offs. By drawing, they finished fifth on the log with 15 points, one less than Silver Valke.

It was evident from the start that Centurion was out to beat Tuks, by any means possible. The home team, spurred on by their partisan and very rowdy supporters, were physical and tested to the point where referee Jimmy Kruger had his hands full with the home team's robust attitude and regular involvement in off the ball incidents.

Early in the first half Tuks’ fullback and regular place kicker, Boeboes Coetzee, had to leave the field with concussion after a dangerous and deliberate high tackle by a Centurion opponent. The irony is that the perpetrator only got a penalty against him, but Boeboes could be sidelined for the next two weeks, for a start missing out on the semi-finals on Saturday.

Tuks was in trouble at the break after infringing twice near their on posts and giving away a try through poor play (3-13). Tuks played better in the second half, but still missed out on too many opportunities to not only take the initiatives but also the lead.

With 8 minutes to go, Tuks flanker Louis van Biljon burst his way through for a good opportunistic try, converted by Hanno Botha (fly half). In the 80th minute Tuks got a penalty just outside Centurion’s 22 metre area, bur Gertjie missed the difficult kick at goal only to level the score a minute later, when Centurion again infringed – this time almost in front of its own posts.

Tuks scorers:

Try: Louis van Biljon. Conversion: Hanno Botha. Penalties: Hanno Botha, Gertjie Smith. Drop goal: Hanno Botha.
