TuksHockey Ladies do Northerns proud

Posted on May 17, 2011

The first match saw the young Northerns team do battle against defending champions North West. It was a thriller of a match which was also delayed for a while as the North West keeper had to be taken to hospital after a serious injury at a stage where Northerns were 2-0 ahead. North West showed some resilience by equalising and the match ended 2-2.

Northerns then came up against Free State who were tournament favourites and won that thriller of match 2-1. Northerns overwhelmingly beat WP Disas 4-1 and drew against KZN Inlands and WP Pens and thus ended 2nd in Pool A, which set them up to play in the Semi-Final against Southern Gauteng. Northerns had 70% ball possession but failed to convert their chances resulting in the match heading to a penalty stroke competition; unfortunately the girls lost the match 4-3.

The ladies ended the tournament on a high by beating KZN Coastals 3-0 ending as Bronze Medallist.

The success of the team was confirmed by the selection of a number of players by the National Selectors. Samantha Prost, Tarryn Moses, Phumelela Mbande, Chanelle Van Niekerk were selected as part of the TOURNAMENT TEAM (The players who stood out the entire tournament) and the following ladies were selected as part of the SA u.21 Junior World Cup Squad (all these players need to be under 21 in 2013: Kirsten Seale, Phumelela Mbande and Lisette Du Plessis.
