Four Tuks swimmers off to Rome

Posted on May 24, 2009

Spearheaded by 3 time Olympic Medallist and former World Record Holder Roland Schoeman, the quartet is made up of William Diering, Schoeman, Darren Murray and Thabang Moeketsana.

"As TuksSwimming we are extremely proud of our swimmers whom have been selected onto the South African swimming team for the FINA World Aquatic Championships, in Rome. It just goes to show that the hard work and planning is paying off. For a youngster
such as Darren, who is still in our HPC academy school, to make it onto the team is a phenomenal achievement. Darren is blessed with enormous talent and this opportunity will be a vital learning curve for him and a great experience. We look forward to great success by our guys at the championships and are extremely proud of them." Said Tuks Swimming Manager and Coach, Steven Ball.

The trip to Rome will be a first for Darren. Although he represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune in October last year and again at the African Championships in December, Rome will be a first at Senior level. Darren did not make the qualifying time for the 200m backstroke, the event he was selected for, but Swim South Africa have seen the enourmous talent that lies in him and feel that giving him a opportunity to compete at a Senior World Championships will be great preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games.

William is already a wily campaigner and shows maturity beyond his years. As one observer said, “if your life depended on it, I would ask William to swim for it. There is no nonsense about him. He gets to the pool, warms up, does the job and just gets on with things.”

Hopefully he will never be put into that kind of situation, but it shows that even outside observers have seen his talent and fighting spirit. William is no stranger to top-flight competition having swum at World Championships, World Short Course Championships and of course the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The three, Diering, Moeketsana and Murray, especially Murray, will take great comfort of knowing that Roland Schoeman is in “their” team as a Tuks member. Schoeman brings with him pedigree, Olympic Medals, World Records and an incredibly fierce fighting attitude and strong self. Who better to have in your camp?
