Posted on May 07, 2012

After achieving the qualifying time for the first time in last Friday's heats, the Tukkie athlete clocked a personal best of 55.36s in the final on Saturday, comfortably winning her race ahead of Janet Lawless (Maties) and teammate Anneri Ebersohn, whose times were 56.44s and 57.86s respectively.

Theron will now have to reach 55.50s again at an international meeting in order to meet SASCOC’s requirements to fully qualify for the Olympic Games. She plans to travel overseas at the end of May to achieve her goal of competing at her very first Olympic Games. Theron will also represent South Africa at the Africa Senior Championships, which will be held in Benin from 27 June to 1 July.

Wenda has now become the fourth Tukkie athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games in London, following in the footsteps of LJ van Zyl, Caster Semenya and Oscar Pistorius.
