Semenya, the 800 m silver medallist at the 2011 World Championships, has already qualified for the Olympic Games and needs to compete at the Championships as part of the fulfilment of the selection criteria agreed on with Sascoc.
On 5 April, Van Zyl, who won a bronze medal in the 400 m Hurdles at the 2011 World Championships, became the first track and field athlete to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games. After previous wins in 2006, 2008 and 2010, the 26-year-old from Gauteng North hopes to win his fourth straight African title in Benin.
This event could be the last chance for Oscar Pistorius to qualify for the Olympics. He still needs one more time of 45.30 seconds or less for the 400 m race at an international meeting to be eligible for a place in the Olympic team.
The other Tuks athletes in the team are:
Hannes Dreyer, Ruan de Vries, Lehann Fourie, PC Beneke, Hubert de Beer, Orazio Cremona, Russel Tucker, Marc Mundell, Estie Wittstock, Claudia Viljoen, Wenda Theron, Annerie Ebersohn, Lynique Prinsloo, Charlene Potgieter, Sonia Smuts, Elizna Naude and Maryke Oberholzer.
We wish them all the best of luck!
