Students designed and built catapult for carnivore

Posted on November 04, 2008

As part of the Community-Based Project Module (JCP) a group of engineering students, designed and built a catapult for the carnivores at the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria. The students are Janeil du Bruyn, Christelle du Toit, Rika Englebrecht, Eugene Jansen, Nadia Nagel and Marc Stocks. The carnivores find it now more interesting if their dinner is not thrown on one heap but they need to run and fetch it. The students enjoyed the project and got a chance to see if their catapult worked.

The JCP-module is a compulsory undergraduate module of the Faculty Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology. Students have to work at least 40 hours in the community and then reflect on their experiences. Their reports in die form of a blog can also be viewed at http:/blogs.up.ac.za, link JCP2008.
