The weekend of 26 to 28 March a group of engineering students, Miss C Axsel, Mr B Burger, Me LM Erdmann, Mr JTO Klynsmith, Mr Etienne Schoeman, Mr D van der Meulen, Mr SSC Zwane decided to take nine boys of Jakaranda Childrens Home (between the ages of 10 and 16) for a horse riding experience on a farm (Eerstelingsfontein) in Belfast as part of their 40 hours for the JCP modules.
The JCP module (Community-Based Project Module) is a compulsory undergraduate module of the Faculty Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology. It entails that students have to work at least 40 hours in the community thereafter reflect on their experiences. The students and boys stayed in a stall and prepared the food ourselves. They played cricket, badminton, ‘klei-lat’, soccer and musical chairs. The students reported back that they made new friends, and will visit the children again in April.
