Three engineering students, Penelope Ingle, Belvin Molepo and Michelle Joubert, built a shade over the sand pit at the Methodist City Mission. It is situated across the road of Burgerspark. Penelope, their group leader reported: “Our little group of three made our way to the Wesley Community Centre in Sunnyside to see how we could be of assistance. Mrs. Fozia informed us that the funders of the Centre wanted a shade area to be built over the play sand pit within the jungle gym grounds. Off we went to buy gum poles, cement, shade clothe and various other materials needed. Little did we know our previous planning was about to have many small hitches here and there, as well as much more expenditure than expected. All in all, the task at hand took us two and a half days of labor to complete, and we are very pleased with the final product. We all learned new things and enjoyed the opportunity to fix a problem for the community. Having the garden staff stop their work to watch us at work was quite humorous too, apparently they find two young girls and a guy trying to work with cement, us girls being the dugga mixers of course, rather interesting:) Feedback was also given by passing moms who commented to us what a wonderful change the playground had undergone."  Job well done!
