Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, opened the colloquium, followed by an excellent keynote address (The younger years in the engineering industry: Liftoff or failure to launch) by TUKS Metallurgical Engineering Alumni, Stefan Swanepoel (Business Develop Analyst from XStrata Alloys).
At the colloquium, three final year metallurgical engineering students participated amongst the 15 entries in the metallurgy section.
Vinolia Teffo won first prize, with her presentation entitled: "Determination of the coefficient of restitution, School of Mining static and rolling friction of an Eskom grade coal"
Andrew Bauristhene won second prize, with his presentation entitled: "Alpha case formation mechanism in the Ti-6A1-4V alloy investment cast using YFSZ shell moulds"
Dewald Haasbroek won third prize, with his presentation entitled: "The evaluation of slag/matte flow within the ACP by physical and CFD modelling"
