Prof Thoko Majozi wins the (SAIChE) Bill Neal-May Gold Medal Award

Posted on September 23, 2010

Professor Thoko Majozi of the Department of Chemical Engineering became one of the few engineers to be honored with the most prestigious SAIChE Award to be conferred to an individual. The Bill Neal-May Gold Medal Award is awarded by SAIChE to an individual or group of individuals who have made a significant contribution to the chemical engineering discipline. In particular, the award recognizes the international relevance of the contribution. Unusually competent chemical engineering effort carried out essentially within Southern Africa, including commercial implementation (where relevant) and with at least an element of innovation, are the main criteria. Prof Majozi, who is also an NRF President’s Awardee (P-rating) has made significant contributions in chemical engineering in recent years.

Some of his work has been adopted by multinational industries in SA. He works mainly in the area of Process Integration with emphasis on batch chemical processes. His book on the subject was published by Springer in January 2010. On receiving the award, Prof Majozi said ‘this particular award is very special to me, since it is the first from my own community of chemical engineers. The others have been very generic.’ Majozi is also a recipient of the S2A3 British Association Medal (silver) and one of the 97 academics who received the Leading Minds Award in 2008 for their contribution to the University of Pretoria, since it was established in 1908.
