New Postgraduate Lab at the department of Food Science

Posted on February 17, 2011

The new post graduate lab is an initiative between Labworld and the Department of Food Science. It began with negotiations between Dr MN Emmambux from Department of Food Science and the Director of Labworld, Mr Malcolm Holman in 2009. Labworld was able to supply various new state-of-the-art pieces of equipment below cost price. The equipment, which are housed in a newly refurbished laboratory are an Ultra Fast Liquid Chromatograph for various analyses including phenolics, sugars and starch, an EZ test texture analyser for instrumental sensory analysis, a Consisto Alveograph for dough rheological analyses, an SdMatic for starch damage analysis, a Near Infra Red Spectrometer for rapid proximate analysis of food and Dumatherm for protein analysis. The lab also has a high pressure differential scanning calorimeter for thermal characterisation of food and will very soon have a rheometer for rheological analysis of food. These pieces of equipment will enhance and carry research in the department forward.
A full article on the launch of the lab is also availabe on the Food and Beverage Reporter magazine December 2010.
