This is a national competition held under the auspices of Akroterion: Journal of the Classics in South Africa, housed in the Department of Ancient Studies, University of Stellenbosch, and is sponsored by the Classical Association of South Africa. The intention of the competition is to encourage promising undergraduate and honours students in Africa to pursue their interest in classics. Essays are submitted on any aspect of Greek or Latin language or literature, or classical history or civilization.
The essays are judged by a panel consisting of three South African scholars: Dr Martine de Marre (UNISA), Dr Annemaré Kotzé (University of Stellenbosch) and Dr Suzanne Sharland (University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban). The competition is open to undergraduates every year and to honours students in even-numbered years only. Christian’s essay, entitled: Why did the Thebans defeat the normally militarily superior Spartans at the Battle of Leuctra (371 BCE)?, examined some of the previously unexplored factors influencing the battle at Leuctra (371 BCE) at which the Thebans were able to defeat the Spartans, who at the time were considered to have had the best army in Greece.
Christian will receive a cash prize and have his winning entry published in Akroterion as the CASA/KVSA Essay.
