The semantics of eating and drinking: a comparison between Afrikaans and Northern Sotho

Posted on September 19, 2011

All are welcome to attend this seminar.

Their study wishes to explore the ways in which the concepts of eating and drinking are lexicalised in two non related languages - Afrikaans and Northern Sotho. They will make use of the conceptual metaphor theory within cognitive semantics to look at metaphors of eating and drinking. Are there significant differences in culture-specific conceptualisations or are these concepts and the metaphors associated with them universal?
