“The theme is one that arouses great interest amongst young learners. It serves as a point of departure, an entry way we hope to use to lure them into the exciting world of the sciences,” says Rudi Horak, curator of the Sci-Enza Science Centre at the University of Pretoria.
The two themes will be presented to the Grade 1-7 learners during the April school holidays. The enchanted world of Dinosaurs is to mesmerize the learners Monday and Wednesday (06 & 08 April 2009). This will contain an interactive presentation about the era, time and place of these entrancing creatures. Learners will view real fossils, construct dinosaurs and participate in many more creative activities throughout the day.
On Tuesday and Thursday (07 & 09 April 2009), the children will not only be graced by the presence of a living vulture in their midst, but they will have the opportunity to touch and interact with it. The specific focus will be on teaching them about South African vultures, nature conservation and other related fun activities.
According to Horak, children need to be exposed to the thrilling and fun aspects of science. Through play and stimulated activities, children can have fun, learn and be captivated by science.
