The UNESCO Chair in Education Law in Africa was awarded to the University of Pretoria in 2010. The
UNESCO Chairs programme was established in 1992, following the decision taken in this regard by the General Conference of UNESCO at its 26th Session. The programme was conceived as a way to advance research, training and programme development in higher education by building university networks and encouraging inter-university cooperation through the transfer of knowledge across borders. Currently 770 institutions in 126 countries are involved in the international network of 644 UNESCO Chairs.
The responsibilities of the Chair include conducting and promoting research in education law in South Africa and Africa; promoting good academic education and professional training in education law; playing an active role as an academic leader of the discipline at both the national and international levels; managing the strategic, academic and operational functions of the UNESCO Chair; and organising fundraising for the activities associated with the Chair.
The Chair will work closely with partners within the University of Pretoria, such as the Faculty of Education, the Interuniversity Centre for Education Law and Education Policy (CELP), the Centre for Child Law, the Centre for Human Rights and the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa. Since the focus is on Education Law in Africa, linkages will be forged with other African organisations and key international institutions dealing with Education Law.
The 2012 World’s Children’s Honorary Award was awarded to Ann for her 25-year battle for the rights of children affected by the justice system in South Africa. Ann has done groundbreaking work for South Africa’s children, both in the courtrooms and by changing laws affecting children.
