The Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship (CAS) at the University of Pretoria (UP) cordially invites you to a panel discussion to celebrate the scholarship of Professor Charles van Onselen on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The discussion will focus on “Biography, Autobiography, and the Writing of History.

Professor Charles van Onselen is a world leading historian, whose research encompasses several fields including historical studies, sociology, criminology and cultural studies. He has written extensively on 19th and 20th century Southern African history and is the author of numerous acclaimed volumes, including Chibaro: African Mine Labour in Southern Rhodesia, The Small Matter of a Horse: The Life of Nongoloza Mathebula, New Babylon, New Nineveh, The Fox and the Flies, The Cowboy Capitalist, The Night Trains and, most recently, Three Wise Monkeys. In 1995, his biography on Kas Maine titled The Seed is Mine won the Alan Paton Award for non-fiction, in 2008 The Fox and the Flies was shortlisted for the same award and the Bill Venter Literary Award in 2010, and in 2021 he was awarded the ASSAf Humanities Book Award for The Night Trains. Professor van Onselen is also the recipient of the Trevor Reese Memorial Prize for outstanding achievement in Commonwealth and Imperial History (1983), the Herskovitz Prize from the African Studies Association of America (1997), and the HSRC Annual Medal in Social Sciences and Humanities (2017). In 2000, 2007, 2014 and 2021, Professor van Onselen was awarded A1-rating by the National Research Foundation of South Africa for his work in the social sciences. Professor van Onselen is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship at the University of Pretoria.
