The University of Pretoria’s hosted Design Justice AI (DJAI) Institute invites you to a virtual gathering over twelve days.

The DJAI is an innovative collaboration bringing together faculty from four leading centres together with the Design Justice Network to explore the rapid diffusion of generative AI technologies and their impact on human languages, communication, arts and cultures.

The DJAI is led by Principal Investigators Lauren M. E. Goodlad (Rutgers University), Matthew Stone (Rutgers University), Katherine Bode (Australian National University), Vukosi Marivate (University of Pretoria), and Eleni Coundouriotis (University of Connecticut). Their shared focus is the development of interdisciplinary and community-centred approaches to AI inspired by the principles of the Design Justice Network.

What to expect:

  • Emerging Scholar Panels and Keynote Plenaries: Access insightful discussions and presentations from leading researchers and practitioners.
  • Community-Centred Research: Learn about innovative methods and practices that centre marginalised voices in AI design and application.

The goal is not only to critique fast-developing technologies but also to envision machine learning systems that are safe, accountable and inclusive.
