Senate Hall, Hatfield Campus, University of Pretoria

Advances in science and technology can yield significant societal benefits and drive economic growth. The challenge for society is to channel evidence about innovative technologies and their risks to improve decision making in the areas of regulation and policy making.

Based on a report issued by the UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser, the lecture addresses both the need for innovation and social concerns about risk, and focuses on how policy-makers and wider society could govern risk most effectively. Risk will be explored through a variety of topics such as GM crops, financial services, resilience of infrastructure, nanotechnology, and shale gas.

Sir Mark Walport was appointed UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) in April. As GCSA Sir Mark advises the prime minister and members of cabinet and government on science and technology policy, improves the quality and use of scientific evidence and advice in government, and leads the science and engineering professions in the UK civil service.

Sir Mark previously served as Director of the Wellcome Trust, as Head of the Division of Medicine at Imperial College London, and was a member of the Advisory Board on Infrastructure UK.

Sir Mark was knighted in 2009 for services to medical research and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 2011.
